The vineyards of the Méntrida Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) are located to the north of Toledo Province, bordering with the provinces of Avila and Madrid, and extend at the foot of the impressive Sierra de Gredos in its eastern part.  This area is crossed by the lower reaches of the Alberche river and some villages connected to wine and its history are distributed around it: Almorox, Escalona, Maqueda, Fuensalida, Camarena, Casarrubios del Monte and Méntrida itself.

Soils y varieties

These are lands situated between Tajo River on its right bank and the Gredos Mountains. Méntrida climate is the extreme continental type with long cold winters, somewhat tempered by be protection from northern and western cold winds that exerts the mountain barrier of Gredos.

The terrain, gently undulated, consists of sandy soils of granitic origin, they are acid and with very little lime which increases the fineness of the wines produced there.

The vast majority of vines belong to the red variety GARNACHA.  They are very old low production vines, trimmed in glass in order to protect the grapes from the summer sun and ensure the best grape ripening.

Summers are hot and rains scarce since they hardly exceed 300 mm.  These weather conditions are ideal for grape cultivation and promote the application of ecological and bio-dynamic natural techniques for winemaking.

In recent years other varieties of grape have been introduced (tempranillo, merlot, syrah, cabernet ...) to complement the native qualities of our queen variety.

Cabernet Franc

With Bordulés origin, like its relative the Cabernet Sauvignon.  Its grains are spherical, small and thin skin.   Moderately astringent pulp. Since it is poorer in tannins than Sauvignon type, it gives softer wines. In fact, in many cases, both varieties are assembled to combine Sauvignon's aggression and intense color with soft colors and tannic lightness of the Franc variety. In France they often refer to both varieties together as the 'Cabernets'.  The Cabernet Franc wines have a deep purple colour when they are young and an herbal aroma.

Cencibel o Tempranillo

Its production is moderate, although of the highest quality and is used to make red wines with aging, in its versions of single varietal or in blends with others.  This is an early maturing variety that produces a medium-size cluster, compact and regular. Its grapes are medium-thick skin and soft flesh, its juice being colorless.

Cabernet Sauvignon

This variety does not offer high production and is characterized by an intense and stable color, its powerful tannins and lively acidity, as provided by hard wines in youth with great aging potential.  It offers a great combination in the blend with other red varieties.

It is original from the the Ebro Valley and its name, of confusing etymology, perhaps comes from the "Grenate" referring to the color of its wines. Medium and compact cluster, black on color and with spheroid shape. This variety has thin-skinned grapes and juicy flesh, with colorless juice.  It is characterized by high productivity.

Graciano is a native variety scarcely widespread in other areas.   It offers wines with considerable acidity and polyphenolic content, ideal for aging and with a very peculiar aroma, superior in strength to other grape varieties. This grape is poorly productive, so it is not very abundant. It is grown in the same vineyard with other varieties.  It grows in arid and warm climates.  The vine produces a low amount of delicately flavored berries that are normally harvested in late October. The cluster has two short cylindrical shoulders.  Its berries are small and round.  They have hard, colorless pulp.  With regard to skin color, it is deep black.

It is a vigorous variety that requires fresh land.   Its sprout is early, being sensitive to spring frosts and mildew.  The clusters are cylindrical, medium-sized and with blue to black grapes. The skin is thick and it has juicy flesh and a pleasant taste.  It produces very aromatic wines.

Petit Verdot

Very late aging, and very sensitive during the harvest process, it only reaches its peak with very hot climates giving very pronounced spicy aromas of banana and even a hint of pencil lead.   It is normally used for mixing with other varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, where it is not added in more than a 10%.The berries are small in size, round, dark blue to purple and with a not-to-tight cluster.  They need plenty of light and heat in order to ripen properly.

It has performed well in warm climates, but in cold climates it shows good adaptability, producing slightly lighter wines.  Its cluster is cylindrical, medium in size with blue grapes, the skin is fairly thick and it has juicy pulp.

Early ripening and low production, it has qualities far away from current standards.  Glyceric white wines, full-bodied and with an unforgettable personality.

It is a very vigorous vineyard, with early sprouting.  Its cluster is small, with amber-colored grapes, small and spherical, with thin skins, consistent pulp and sweet flavor.  Its adaptation to diverse conditions and its versatility as a raw material for young white or sparkling wines are the keys to its success.

Moscatel de grano menudo

One of the most beautiful wine varieties world, characterized by its subtle orange fragrance.   It is considered the finest and most elegant of all the types of Muscatel, the small grain variety is native of La Rioja. It is an early-sprouting grape, with good performance in calcareous soils, but not with too much clay or wet. It is a medium grain grape, ellipsoidal, with amber color, easy detachment, consisting skin, fleshy pulp and with a clear Muscat flavor.  It produces a medium bunch, semi-cylindrical-pyramidal and winged.  Semi-dry or dry wines are obtained from it, ideal in blends to perfume neutral wines. The sweet wine is golden yellow, sometimes with amber color, intense perfume, strongly aromatic, robust body, alcoholic and sweet.

Sauvignon Blanc

This variety is very aromatic and adapted to cold climates, but also offers an acceptable adaptation to dry climates.   Its sprout is early and cold resistant. The clusters are medium-sized and cylindrical, with grapes of straw yellow color, its skin is soft and very fragrant juice.

One of the best white grapes in Spain, of a high quality.  With horizontal aspect and strong stem, of early ripening and medium or early sprouting. Its cluster is small, with a visible stalk, it has a berry of 8 to 14 mm with short elliptical shape, a rather thick skin, its color is between green and yellow, green flesh and dark green leaves with a little shine. They give aromatic, fruity wines, with a touch of anise. The flavors on the palate are fresh, acid, full-bodied, soft and greasy and with a long persistence.

Viura o Macabeo

It has a strain of great force, which provides good performances.  Its sprouting is late and its collection period is short and, so it should be carefully collected due to the low consistency of its skin.  Its cluster is compact, large and with yellow-greencolor. It has thick grape and colorless juice, balanced in sugar and body. Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) is composed by Wineries, Cooperatives, Marketing Companies and, above all, by farmers that are the alive strength pampering the vineyards and with their determination we are able to improve day by day the wines of out region.
